The Story of the Creation of Winter Wren Farm

Sowing the Seeds of Sustainability

Our journey into the adventures of homesteading and small scale farming began back in 2015 when myself and my husband Jason, bought this pristine and beautiful 9.8 acres of land, at the foot of the mighty Mount H’Kusam, in the Sayward Valley. What drew us to this acreage was, southern exposure, the promise of warm, fertile soil and an abundance of crystal-clear pure water from the lovely mountain fed, Stowe Creek, that flows through the property. A small rustic cottage and a workshop, built by the very first and former owner, provided us with the basics to manifest and create our organic practise market gardens, ethical farming, minimal environmental footprint, and homesteading dream!

Now, as I compose this story it’s February 2023 and we are in our eighth year of developing this small “pocket farm”, utilizing such farming practices as, - Square Foot, Permaculture, Bio-Dynamic and Grow-Intensive. On this small eco-sensitive acreage, we use in forage, orchard, and vegetable crops, only a four-acre area. We are always mindful of our footprint on this land, and we strive for minimal impact and strong stewardship of Stowe Creek and the wetlands that border each side of our little farm. After the initial land clearing was completed in the Spring of 2015, we continued to develop the land using only the very basic of tools. We chose to reduce our impact on the soil, by digging fence post in by hand, using large Heritage breed pigs, as well as chickens and turkeys, to clear the land and fertilize and till the soil.

My love of gardening and raising poultry along with my husband Jason’s skilled carpentry and fencing efforts have blossomed this little acreage into a productive Market Garden and Heritage Turkey venture. In the past few years, we’ve constructed a large greenhouse, built woodland pasture shelter “cabins” and roosts for our free ranging Endangered Canadian Heritage Ridley Bronze Turkeys, a conservation project we both greatly enjoy. We also naturally raise Beltsville Small White Turkeys and Mistral Gris Heritage meat birds, as well as a small flock of Heritage laying hens. Every year we raise a few Heritage pigs, for their delicious meat, fertile manure and fantastic land clearing skills.

As we strive towards the dream of food sovereignty, detaching ourselves from the system of factory farming and chemically raised genetically modified food. We embrace the ethical aspect of our local food supply, the ability to supplement our income with Market and Farm Gate sales, and by keeping our poultry and animals naturally happy and healthy, as well as our land richly fertile, naturally, as nature intended.

Enjoy our pastured Heritage Turkey, Heritage Meat Chickens, Pork and farm fresh vegetables. Free from the use of growth hormones, antibiotics, vaccines, GMO feed, and synthetic fertilizers.

All natural and naturally delicious!
